The Basenji is a hunting and companion dog that originated in Central Africa. It is one of the oldest breeds from Africa.

Appearance & Grooming

The Basenji is a small dog with long legs. The breed has a well-known wrinkle in the middle of the forehead, which makes it look distrustful. The breed has a short and smooth coat in white, brindle, tan, red, and black. The Basenji sheds moderately and requires occasional bathing and brushing.

Behavior & Disposition

The Basenji is affectionate, curious, alert, active, intelligent, poised, and independent. They tend to play well with older children. However, adult supervision is recommended when playing with younger children and other dogs.

Activity Level

The Basenji has a high activity level, but it is still easy for the breed to become overweight. The Basenji needs to be carefully monitored for calorie consumption and weight.

It is easy to train the Basenji through positive reinforcement. Short training sessions are recommended to avoid boredom. Early socialization and obedience training are essential.
